Introduction to the Natural Resources and Environmental Science Program

[ Music] therefore welcomed Purdue University virtual whiz advising and the nras program we’re very excited to have you joining us this fail and we look forward to meeting you in person and working with you over the next several years while you end your major I’m dr. Linda polka pea one of the co-directors of nras I’m a social scientist and I study parties and its relationship with the environmental issues including I focus on farmers here in the Midwest and how to get them to adopt more environmentally friendly rehearsals hello I’m dr.Laura bowling I’m the other co-director of the NRS program I’m a hydrologist which represents I study sea including I study how humans impact the water repetition through things such as land use change and climate change we’d like to take this opportunity to tell you that yes major so I want to start by granting a brief introduction to the NRS program NRS is an interdisciplinary program which means that students are not going to learn about only one side of environmental science such as the biological aspects of the system or the human rights aspects instead we give a resilient intention of study that merges both the fundamental science with social awareness and policy so all students are going to have castes in the core physical chemical and biological sciences as well as social science and policy we have six absorptions within the major which I will go through and describe shortly these absorptions are watershed administration atmosphere and energy mixtures environmental quality and recovery environmental policy and analysis sustainability science and emerging environmental challenges our first accumulation is watershed management students in this concentration make categories that are focused on how we engage those living in watersheds to manage the land to protect water resources they might engage in educate stakeholders to implement land-use and watershed rehearses to protect and improve water quality and national resources they might work to involve citizen scientists and monitoring the health of watersheds or they might work on water conservation trying to improve the efficiency of water management agriculture our next accumulation is climate and power solutions students who graduate from this concentration will work towards the evaluation of climate wallops change mitigation and alternative force solutions they may work in energy consulting helping companies to put together alternative energy portfolios or they may work in the sustainable power business in the nonprofit sector or with regional regime and federal agencies our third concentration is Environmental Quality and recovery students who graduate with this absorption are employed in several different sectors they might work in environmental consulting to remediate soil or hazardous waste places or to restore impaired wetland ecosystems or they might investigate emerging issues of water quality concern through a mood or federal environmental agency this absorption has a greater emphasis on science as opposed to management our fourth accumulation is program and analysis several students break away from this concentration in recent years have gone on to law school or they might work in areas of analysis such as Natural Source fiscals or working on climate policy perhaps in the planning domain or they might work for regulatory agencies at either the nation or federal elevation the stray concentration is sustainability science this accumulation concentrates on approaches to minimize the reduction of Natural Riches in agriculture industry and other sectors in order to offset environmental social and economic considerations possible careers with this concentration include a sustainability man in private industry environmental and conduct consulting or supply chain management our final concentration is the most flexible this is called emerging environmental challenges as I said it’s meant to be a very flexible concentration where some of our very best most motivated students can design their own major to address an environmental challenge that then there personally fierce about for which there is not an existing major on campus in recent years we’ve had students who have put together a major on ecotoxicology on hormones in the environment or naval conservation thanks dr.Boling that concludes the summing-up of our six accumulations but don’t worry you don’t have to know which accumulation you want to do right now we expect our students to pick their concentration by the end of their second year we also require our students to complete an internship or a research experience and these are generally done in the summer after their after the second or third year of college or sometimes even both throughout your time with us in nras we too expect you to have annual mentoring engagements with either one of the co-directors or one of the our other affiliated faculty member it’s also required that you complete a capstone experience and this is usually be done in order to both the junior and elderly year so you are able to do a report a class where you report out on your internship or research ordeal and then your elderly time we have a Senior Seminar and then by the end of your junior time you too need to decide if you’re interested in pursuing our 4+1 program that we have with the triple-a department that is the environmental and ecological engineering department in the College of Engineering we have a handful of students every year that pursue this option which allows you graduate from Purdue in five years with a bachelor’s degree in nras and an MS degree in the triple e curriculum thank you today so much for your time today and that concludes our very brief description of the NRS major
